Grants & Scholarships

Friday, September 11, 2009

In an instant, summer is over and school has started. That means the scholarship season is quickly approaching. Local schools are starting to set dates for Scholarship Nights and starting to promote the awards to their student bodies.
Here in the DSACF office too, we're getting ready. Many committees have a fall meeting to review the past year and to establish any changes in policy or procedures. Those meetings are set for the first week or two of October. I don't expect any big changes, but those committees will be considering some tweaks to the DSACF Scholarship Application. We've rearranged the application to be a little more user-friendly and logical. We've also added a couple new scholarships. The new application should be available by Halloween at the latest.
But it's not too early to start thinking about your scholarship application. Even with the changes, the main essay questions won't be substantially different. Start now and put some time into the main question about 'a life experience which has profoundly affected you' and the short answer questions 'what were your accomplishments that you took pride in and 'what three classes from high school have best prepared you for college.'
Doing that now will give you a leg up when it comes to actually writing the essay in the coming months.
