Grants & Scholarships

Friday, March 20, 2009

The time for applications is now past and now, here at the Community Foundation, we are focusing on selection. The foundation has numerous selection committees which do the work of selecting students. All the committees are staffed with amazingly qualified volunteers. Looking at the committee lists you will see teachers, professors, businessmen and women, lawyers, doctors, politicians, homemakers and - depending on the scholarship - even a few students.

The work that these people do is invaluable to the Community Foundation. The committee members spend hours reviewing applications, reading essays, pouring over spreadsheets and finally meeting at selection committee meetings. Their decisions are not easy, but every year they step up to the plate and make the decisions that need to be made.

Because each scholarship at the Community Foundation has its own criteria, it's impossible to go into detail about how decisions are made. For some scholarships financial need is important, for others it's academics, for others the important thing is community involvement or school activities. The priority for each scholarship is decided by the donor who originally creates the fund. Committee members think about the priority criteria, compare that with the list of applicants, and choose winners and alternates. It is amazing how our committee members can weigh all these criteria together and make wise selections over and over again.

The selection committees make recommendations which then go to the Community Foundation Board of Trustees for final approval. The Board meets on the last Wednesday of most months so watch this space for decisions. We will be communicating our decisions to all applicants, but this is where decisions will first be made public.
